Sam, along with his wife, Sue, are Spokane natives and grew up on the South Hill, graduating from Ferris High School. Sue currently serves as the Human Resource Specialist for Union Gospel Mission and Sam most recently served as the Director of Church Engagement for Partners International, based here in Spokane. Before his time at Partners, Sam served as the Lead Pastor at North Seattle Church and spent thirty years serving as a Church Planter, Lead Pastor, Executive Pastor and Seminary Professor. Sam has also served as the Director of a research center at Heliopolis University in Cairo, Egypt. Unfortunately, his time in Egypt was cut short by the Egyptian Revolution, which he experienced first-hand. Previous to his time in Egypt, Sam served as the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program and was faculty in the Center for Transformational Leadership at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where he continues as a faculty member in the Doctor of Ministry program. He also serves as an external examiner for PhD candidates at a University in South Africa.
Regardless of his professional role, Sam’s heart has always been for the local church and sharing the life-transforming Good News of the Gospel with a passion for the spiritual formation of believers. Even while serving full-time as a professor, he served two churches as interim lead pastor for extended terms. He is also the author or co-author of five books with another in the works. Sam earned a BA in Political Science from Eastern Washington University, an M.Div., and D.Min. from Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, and earned a Ph.D. in Socio-Economic Transformation from the University of Buckingham, U.K. His thesis was entitled, Spiritual Capital: A Moral Core for Economic Practice.
Sam and Sue have been married for 38 years and have four adult children, two of whom live in Spokane and one in Post Falls, ID. Their youngest son Sam Jr. lives with his wife and daughter in Minneapolis, MN. They are grandparents to five granddaughters and one grandson, with another granddaughter on the way! Sam and Sue love spending time with their family and spending time building relationships with those they serve. Sam has been an avid hunter and fly fisherman and enjoys working out at the gym, reading biographies and books on spiritual formation, theology and leadership. Sam and Sue look forward to serving the faith community at Fourth Memorial.
